Friends of Nevada Wilderness planning summer projects Volunteers needed for restoration, maintenance work in Santa Rosas

WINNEMUCCA - Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors through swimming, hiking, hunting, camping, riding horses, fishing, biking, riding ATVs, boating and much more! Recreation in the outdoors is to be expected this summer among the Winnemucca community and northern Nevadans. Volunteers will come together in the next few months to participate in stewardship on the beautiful Santa Rosa Ranger District in Paradise Valley to ensure that people can continue to enjoy recreating in the area for years to come.

Dedicated volunteers of all ages will be working on restoring and maintaining various Santa Rosa wilderness trails on the weekend of June 22 - 24. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to participate in performing maintenance of the popular Lye Creek Campground in the Santa Rosas July 13 - 15. This project will help conclude a wonderful week of summer camp put on by a partner organization: Nevada Outdoor School. This Adventure Camp is open to sixth- through eighth-grade students and will be a great opportunity to learn about the outdoors, meet new people, camp out, play games and have fun for a week!

Each of these projects will take place in coordination with the Forest Service, and Nevada Outdoor School. Friends of Nevada Wilderness and its partnering organizations are looking forward to coming together as a team to maintain and restore various Santa Rosa trails and the Lye Creek Campground area. There is a great deal of work to be done so if you would like to contribute in this effort with your family, friends, organization or group please contact us. There are no requirements, everyone is welcome to help!

These upcoming projects are categorized as "Family Friendly" which means they are open to anyone and everyone. Nevada Outdoor School will also be hosting a day Kids Camp with interactive activities on both of these project weekends. There will be fun available for the whole family and all volunteers will be making a difference!

Barbara Wall, a first-time volunteer with Friends of Nevada Wilderness had this to say about working on a past project in the Santa Rosa Ranger District: "The weekend experience as a volunteer in the Santa Rosa Range doing restoration work definitely gave me an extra bounce in my step and sparkle in my eyes on Monday morning. It was great to be part of a team with the goal of restoring the wilderness in such a beautiful and pristine area. Very few stories of white emigrants crossing Nevada in the 1800s include the term "paradise," so when you hear of a town with the name "Paradise Valley," you'd do well to check it out ... Definitely a trip to remember."
