It was a mixed bag for the Lowry High School freshmen boys basketball team on two-day road trip last weekend.
The Buckaroos defeated Dayton 51-21 on Jan. 24 but lost to South Tahoe 39-37 on Saturday afternoon. With the split, Lowry is 13-6 overall and 8-2 in the Division I-A North.
Jed Teichert scored 11 points in the first quarter against Dayton as Lowry jumped out to a 16-2 lead and never looked back. The Buckaroos held the Dust Devils without a field goal in the opening eight minutes.
"I pretty much pulled everything off after the first quarter," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "It was a good chance for the bench players to get a lot of time on the floor. I was looking for our guys to get a little more aggressive."
Leading 26-8 at halftime, the Buckaroos put the game out of reach with a 17-6 run in the third quarter. Jacob Hernandez and Teichert combined for 12 of the points as Lowry built a 43-14 lead.
Teichert and Hernandez paced the Buckaroos with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Travis Hardy and Brian Kelly added six points each, Brady Lange four, Austin Robison and Jacob Barnes three apiece and Dustin Gray.
"Travis stepped up and had a nice game for us," Beatty said. "We have a couple of starters out and we had other guys come in and play well."
Lowry was looking to complete the season sweep of South Tahoe and held a 27-20 lead at halftime. Teichert, Lange and Hernandez combined for 25 the points but the Buckaroos weren't able to maintain the advantage in the second half.
South Tahoe cut the deficit to one point after the third quarter and held Lowry to 10 points in the second half. The Vikings made a pair of 3-point field goals as part of their 12-6 run in the third quarter. South Tahoe closed the contest with a 7-4 spurt in the final eight minutes to complete the comeback.
Teichert led all scorers with 19 points and was joined in double figures by Lange with 10. Hernandez scored four points and Salvador Perez and Gray had two each.
