FREE FLU SHOTS COMING TO WINNEMUCCA

WINNEMUCCA - Free flu shots will be available on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Winnemucca Events Center on Fairgrounds Road. The drive-through clinic is provided by the Nevada State Health Division.

The drive-through concept is new for the Winnemucca area. This convenient option is popular in other Nevada communities. Drivers and their passengers receive the vaccination while remaining in their vehicle. Ample signage will direct motorists to the proper area.

In February, the World Health Organization recommended the strains for the upcoming seasonal flu vaccine. Flu vaccine for the current season has one strain in common with last year's vaccine, H1N1, plus two new viral strains, B and H3N2.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5 percent to 20 percent of Americans get the flu each year, leading to 200,000 hospitalizations. The number of flu-related deaths varies each year, ranging from 3,000 to 49,000.

The CDC recommends that everyone older than six months receive an annual flu vaccine, especially those who are at high risk of developing serious complications such as pneumonia if they get sick with the flu:

• People with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease; as well as their caregivers and close contacts.

• Pregnant women.

• People 65 years and older.

The Humboldt County Community Health Clinic will partner with the Frontier Community Coalition, Humboldt General Hospital EMS team, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, the Winnemucca Host Lions and Leos Club, the Lowry High School Honor Society and others to host the Winnemucca drive-through vaccination clinic.
