Fred G. Barnes, 91, of Golconda, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011. He was born in San Diego, Calif., to Fred and Edith Barnes. He was raised in Watsonville and Oakland, Calif., and graduated from Oakland Tech High School. He studied electrical engineering and traveled the world as a Seaman in the Merchant Marines.

He married Dorothy Fregulia on April 19, 1942, and joined his father as a professional sign painter for Coke and Sprite in Northern California.

He moved to Nevada in 1953 and managed the Ashdown Mine before moving to Winnemucca. He worked for John Etchart Construction and later became an electrician for Getchell Mine. Upon Getchell's closing, he stayed on as a caretaker and this gave him plenty of time to prospect and with his friend and partner, John Etchart, they discovered the property that became Chimney Creek Mine near what is now Twin Creeks. He retired in 1988 and moved to Golconda where he and Dorothy lived for 20 years.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy; his son Jeff and daughter-in-law Susan and a sister, Barbara. Fred is survived by his sons Barney and Pete; three sisters, Dorothy, Rosemary and Frances, several nieces and nephews, four grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at the Albertson Funeral Home. No public viewing is planned. Burial will take place at the Winnemucca Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. The family would like to thank the staff of Harmony Manor and Albertson Funeral Home for the care shown for Fred.
