Fourth annual Dutch Oven Cook-Off full of food, fun and prizes

WINNEMUCCA - Delicious food, good company, money, prizes and lots of sunshine marked Nevada Outdoor School's Fourth Annual Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook-Off, held Saturday, Aug. 25, at Riverview Park.

Many volunteers, local companies and cooks helped make this event great, organizers said. Guest judges Mayor Di An Putnam, Bill Jones and Michael Padua put their tastebuds (and belt buckles) to the challenge by tasting over 15 delicious dishes. After the judges were served, tasting was opened up to the public for a suggested donation of $10 (including a souvenir cup and door prize ticket). Many people came out to taste and cast their votes for the people's choice award dish.

Cooks registered in one of two categories: Bean Master and Chuck Wagon. Bean Masters (including Earl Pimelton, Betty Rogers, Tami Riley and Wes Hoskins) made a main dish and desert. Chuck Wagon participants (Bob Himmelreich, Arlene and Dale Lunen, Mindi LeFlar, Melanie Erquiaga, Julie Ricker, Brian Ford, John McCann and Ron Clark) cooked a main dish.

Betty Rogers was awarded 1st place for Bean Masters and took home $250 for her gumbo with rice and chocolate cake; 2nd place went to Earl Pimelton for his chili with cornbread and pineapple upside-down cake; and 3rd place went to Tami Riley who cooked chicken noodle soup and almost pumpkin pie.

In the Chuck Wagon category, Ron Clark won 1st place and $100 for his Basque medley. Mindi LeFlar's lasagna won 2nd place and Bob Himmelreich's beef stew came in 3rd. The public ate, they voted, and Mindi LeFlar took home the People's Choice Award trophy and a year of bragging rights.

The event wrapped up with door-prize drawings for public tasters and cooks alike and a bike drawing for NOS Summer Camp participants. Door prizes included donations from local businesses such as, Dominos, The Boot Barn, Shore Line, Bikes and More, Northern NV Trading Co., and Goodnight Irene. A special thanks also goes out to Echeverria Plumbing for their generous (and much appreciated) donation.

Jealous you missed such a tasty event or want to have that great experience again? Not to worry, Nevada Outdoor School will host the Fifth Annual Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook-Off next August.
