Foghorn Stringband make triumphant return to Winnemucca

Foghorn Stringband are part of the Northwest old time music revival, and are comparable to other old time revival groups like Outlaw Social, the Tallboys Stringband, and Uncle Earl.

This high-energy band will perform Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at The Martin Hotel in Winnemucca.

They are the shining gold standard for American stringband music, with seven albums, thousands of shows, over a decade of touring under their belts, and two entirely new generations of old-time musicians following their lead. Through all this, they've never let the music grow cold; instead they've been steadily proving that American roots music is a never-ending well of inspiration.

From their origins in Portland, Oregon's underground roots music scene, the core duo of Foghorn Stringband, Caleb Klauder, whose wistful, keening vocals and rapid-fire mandolin picking have always been the heart of the band, and Stephen 'Sammy' Lind, perhaps the best old-time fiddler of his generation, have spread the old-time stringband gospel all over the world, but they've also brought in new influences and inspirations from their many travels and fellow bandmates. Vintage country and honky-tonk became a staple of Foghorn Stringband thanks to Klauder's intense passion for the music, and frequent visits to Louisiana have inspired the group to bring Cajun songs into the repertoire.

According to the band's official bio, many of the band's members came from rock and roll backgrounds, "attracted to old time music by its accessibility and communal spirit." Onstage and on record, the group sits in a circle and plays together like a group of pickers sitting on a front porch. Though they tour the country and are well-known on the festival circuit, they frequently play square dances and free gigs in their hometown of Portland, Ore.

This event is presented by Great Basin Arts and Entertainment, a local all volunteer grass-roots non-profit, organized to bring world class performances to our community. Tickets are available at Global Coffee, Nature's Corner and The Martin Hotel. For more information visit www.gbae.org.
