Five to be inducted into 'Buckaroo Hall of Fame' over Labor Day weekend

WINNEMUCCA - Five legendary cowboys will join Humboldt County's "Buckaroo Hall of Fame" as part of the 31st annual Western Art Roundup during Labor Day weekend.

The now-annual ceremony commemorates the lives of those local cowboys who worked the cattle ranges of northern Nevada and the Great Basin from the late 1800s into the 1900s.

This year's celebration is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 31, in the East Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center. The public is invited to attend; there is no charge for admission.

This year's honorees include Jack D. Hammond, Harry "Sharkey" Hunt, Sam Spahan, Tom Marvel and Frank Bidart.

Carl Hammond, the founder of the Western Art Roundup, decided to add the permanent museum-type display in 1988. Since 1990, over 86 legends have been honored.

A book, "Buckaroo Legends of the Great Basin," published in 2011, includes photos and biographies of inductees honored from 1990 to 2011. It will be available for sale during the event.

The induction ceremony is just one part of the Western Art Roundup, which will take place from Friday, Aug. 30, through Sunday, Sept. 1, at the East Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center.

The show has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1983. Hammond said just 12 western artists were featured that year.

This year, more than 300 pieces of art will be on display, ranging from braiding and bit and spur making to custom saddlery, the horsehair arts and custom boot making.

The annual Roundup will open at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, with a "meet the artist and craftsmen get-together." The afternoon will feature country music as well as poetry readings. No-host cocktails will follow at 5 p.m. with a banquet at 6 p.m. designed to honor Buckaroo Hall of Fame inductees.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, the Western Art Roundup officially opens. The event will feature a display of paintings and other artwork depicting the buckaroos, pioneers and Native Americans who settled the West. Plus, artist demonstrations and cowboy poetry will be staged throughout the day.

The Buckaroo Hall of Fame inductions will take place at 12:30 p.m. A wine tasting and Buckaroo Hall of Fame honoree reception will follow at 3 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., a "Quick Draw" competition will take place followed by a live auction at 4:30 p.m. of Quick Draw and other art pieces.

On Sunday, the show will continue at a much more relaxed pace from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Western Art Roundup show is free to the public. For more information, contact Carl Hammond at (541) 573-2921 or email buckaroohalloffame@yahoo.com.

The Friday, Aug. 30, edition of the Humboldt Sun will include brief biographical sketches and photos of each of the five inductees into the "Buckaroo Hall of Fame."
