First outdoor market to be held in Kingston Sept. 1

Event to feature fresh produce, kids games and a barbecue

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - People are expected to flock to Kingston from all over for the first Kingston Outdoor Market to be held Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lee Baker Park.

The event will feature fresh produce, vendors, a barbecue, kids games, raffles, horseshoes, a flea market and more.

"We envision this as a fun outlet for local families and vendors," said Bradley Ward, the main event organizer who sits on the newly formed Kingston Parks and Recreation Department, a nonprofit organization with 12 volunteer members. All proceeds from the event will benefit the department.

The department was formed by the Kingston Town Board in the spring to take care of 40 acres of common area owned by Kingston Management Association, Inc., the local homeowners association. The department's primary focus areas for the coming year are Lee Baker Park and the Kingston pond.

The event is being hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department and the money raised will go toward split rail fencing for Lee Baker Park, leveling some of the areas of the park, automatic irrigation and additional trees and grass, said Ward.

As of Aug. 21, there were around a dozen vendors signed up for the event including fresh produce, canned goods, metal art, old fashioned root beer floats, clothes, collectibles, antiques, family haircuts and western art. The produce will include Hearts of Gold cantaloupe, honey and sweet corn, said Ward.

The vendors are either local or from surrounding areas such as Round Mountain, Austin and Fallon. The Kingston Volunteer Fire Department is slated to have an information booth, said Ward.

It is preferred that people sign up for booth ahead of time. The booth fee is $10 in advance and $25 the day of the event. Those who would like to reserve a booth can contact Ward at (775) 964-1034.

The Parks and Recreation Department will be holding a barbecue for $5 a plate which includes hotdogs, hamburgers, chili and chips. Beer, wine, soda and water will be for sale.

Ward said items have been donated from businesses as raffle prizes and include complimentary sporting clays at Perdiz Sport Shooting in Eureka, a gift certificate to Raine's Market in Eureka and gift certificates from businesses including the Kingston Creek Lodge, Miles End Lodge Bed and Breakfast, Zach's Lucky Spur Saloon, Half Moon Saloon in Round Mountain and Smoky Valley Tire in Carvers.

Anyone who wishes to donate a raffle prize is asked to call Ward. Donations are tax deductible. Raffle tickets will be $1 each or six for $5.

There will also be fishing at the Kingston pond. The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) requires that those who are 12 and older have a valid Nevada fishing license with a trout stamp. The limit at the pond and the creek is five trout per day.

In the event of bad weather, the event will be moved to the fire hall. Ward said he is hoping that this will become an annual event.
