The annual Nevada Regional Mine Rescue Competition took place at the Winnemucca Events Complex Tuesday through Thursday. Underground mine rescue teams from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.; the Climax Molybdenum mine in Empire, Colo.; the Heckla Limited mine in Mullan, Idaho; the Barrick Cortez mine in Crescent Valley; the Barrick Goldstrike mine in Elko; the Newmont Carlin mine in Elko; and the Barrick Turquoise Ridge mine in Golconda competed in written and field tests. The winner was announced Thursday night at an awards ceremony (after press time). On Wednesday, teams were presented with rescue scenarios that lasted approximately two hours and involved a meticulous process of rescuing trapped miners.
