WINNEMUCCA - The 2013 fall sports season begins this weekend for Lowry High School.

The Lowry junior varsity and varsity football teams open the season on Thursday as they host Battle Mountain in non-conference games at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

The Lowry volleyball team will also be in Winnemucca on Friday and Saturday to host the State Farm Insurance Classic. Six teams from northern Nevada and Middleton, Idaho, join Lowry in the two-day tournament.

Lady Bucks are scheduled to play Fernley at noon, Dayton (2:30 p.m.), Whittell (3:45 p.m.) and Middleton (6:15 p.m.) on Friday, all in the main gym at the high school.

The tournament moves to a double-elimination formation on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The championship match is set for 3:30 p.m.

Lowry's boys and girls soccer teams make the trip east on Friday and Saturday for the Spring Creek Jamboree. The Lowry boys are scheduled to play Battle Mountain at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and Fernley at 4:30 p.m. The Buckaroos will play a single game on Saturday against White Pine at noon.

The Lady Bucks face Jerome, Idaho, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and play twice on Saturday against Battle Mountain (10:30 a.m.) and White Pine (4:30 p.m.).

The Lowry girls golf team will travel to Elko on Thursday for the Regional Icebreaker beginning at 8 a.m.

This is the only trip to Elko since each team in the Division I-A North takes a year off from hosting a regular season league meet. The Icebreaker tournament doesn't count toward the league standings. The first official tournaments are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. in Dayton and Thursday, Sept. 5, at South Tahoe at 9 a.m.

The cross country teams start the year on Friday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Whittell. The Buckaroos' lone home meet is Friday, Oct. 11, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

The McDermitt High School volleyball team is tentatively set to open its schedule on Friday, Sept. 6, and Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Smith Valley tournament. The Lady Bulldogs begin Division IV East play on Thursday, Sept. 19, against Wells at 1 p.m.

The McDermitt High School football team is scheduled to play its first game on Friday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. against Jackpot.
