Firewood cutting permits available at Elko BLM

ELKO - With the arrival of fall and colder temperatures, the Bureau of Land Management's Elko District is offering firewood cutting permits to prepare for the coming winter months.

Non-commercial wood cutting permits are required to harvest forest products from public lands and are available at the Elko District Office located at 3900 East Idaho Street. Generally, a minimum purchase of $12 is required for all wood products.

Maps of authorized firewood cutting areas and stipulations are provided when purchasing permits.

Pinyon pine and Utah Juniper permits are $6 a cord with a minimum two-cord purchase. Mountain Mahogany permits are $12 a cord with a minimum two-cord purchase.

People may purchase up to 10 cords before a commercial firewood cutting permit is required. Only dead trees - standing or down - may be cut.

One and two-cord permits are valid for up to 60 days and three-plus cord permits are valid up to 90 days. Commercial firewood cutting permits are also available.

While out cutting firewood, remember to bring wood permits and maps, and please bring trash back out with you. For fire safety, wood cutters should have a fire extinguisher, shovel and bucket of water handy. In addition, all chainsaws must be equipped with spark arrestors.
