Donovan Walker, assistant fire management officer for the BLM Winnemucca District, said Monday morning that 100 firefighters were on the blaze, which started Sunday at about 11 a.m. Resources on the fire included five engines, two water tenders and two dozers.
He said the fire was burning in the Humboldt Range in Pershing County right below the mine but was not spreading. The mine's tailing pile stopped the head of the fire.
The fire has retardant around it from drops made by air tankers Sunday, and crews are finishing cutting fire lines, Walker said. The Pershing County Volunteer Fire Department is also on the fire.
Walker said there was no lightning Sunday and BLM and Pershing County officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
