Final state playoffs of high school season this week

WINNEMUCCA - The final state championships of the high school year take place this week for Lowry and McDermitt high schools.

The Lowry High School boys golf team is in Boulder City for the NIAA 3A State Golf Championships presented by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Farmers Insurance. The opening round was scheduled for Monday afternoon at Boulder Creek. Results were not available at press time, but first-day results are posted at www.niaa.com. The final 18 holes will be played at Boulder Municipal Golf Course today, with the first tee times at 11 a.m.

The Buckaroos are looking for their state-record 11th title and are competing against Elko, Spring Creek and Boulder City.

After a year's absence, the Lowry softball team is returning to the state tournament after sweeping South Tahoe 7-1 and 11-1 this past weekend in one of the three the regional tournament pods.

The Lady Bucks play Boulder City, the Southern 3A champion, Thursday at 3 p.m. at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno. Churchill County, the defending 3A champion, faces Fernley in the other semifinal at 5 p.m.

The action moves to Hixson Park on the campus of the University of Nevada on Friday and Saturday. Friday's winner's bracket game is set for 11 a.m., while the losers from Thursday meet at 9 a.m. The championship game is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The Lowry and McDermitt track and field teams will be in Reno Friday and Saturday for the NIAA State Championships at Damonte Ranch High School. Action gets underway at 3 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday. For a complete list of events and times, visit www.niaa.com.
