'Fifties Fever' Poker Run open to public

WINNEMUCCA - Local residents are invited to get in on this year's fun as the "Fifties Fever" classic car fest returns to town.

From Friday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 5, event participants will "twist and shout" their way from drag races down Winnemucca's Trader's Way to parties at local casinos, car shows, cash giveaways, doo-wop entertainment and dancing in poodle skirts.

The fever will get hotter and hotter until Sunday when the annual Show 'N' Shine will surround the Winnemucca Convention Center along with some serious "shake, rattle and roll" on the Nixon Lawn. From a free outdoor concert with Dave Badilla to awards and giveaways, the afternoon will lead up to a perfect finish as all those hot wheels take part in the Main Street Cruise.

As part of the three-day event, organizers have opened up a Poker Run Saturday for Fifties Fever participants as well as the general public.

The Poker Run will begin at 11 a.m. at the Pig BBQ & Pub, located at 1139 W. Winnemucca Blvd., and continue until 4 p.m. Participants will receive one hand in their registration bags; extra hands will be available at the Pig BBQ & Pub.

Additionally, participants will make four more mandatory stops including Open Loop Energy, Global Coffee, Two Brothers Communications and Chihuahua's Restaurant.

Poker hands must be turned into the Model T Resort Casino between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the D.J. Booth on the East Side of the C-Store; $600 in cash prizes will be awarded at 4:15 p.m. The day's best hand will receive $400 cash, and second best hand will receive $150.

A random drawing of all hands will take place as well for $50. A bounty of small prizes also will be up for grabs, so participants are encouraged to turn in their hands, no matter how bad they might seem!

Darrel Field, marketing and special events coordinator for the Winnemucca Convention Center, said the event is shaping up to be an enjoyable one. "We'll have a lot of our visitors doing the Poker Run," he said, "but we don't want our locals to miss out on the fun either, so we would love to have them come and participate."
