Festival of Trees event radiates holiday spirit

The Festival of Trees event kicked off the local holiday season in the east hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center over the weekend. The event, organized and hosted by the Winnemucca Host Lions Club, drew 1,150 people through the display of 64 trees. Each tree was decorated and donated by a local organization and subsequently bid on by festival-goers. According to Lions Second Vice President Dawn Baldwin, over $9,000 was earned, 100 percent of which stays in Winnemucca. The tree with the highest bid was Newmont Phoenix's "A Copper Kitchen," which was won by the Humboldt General Hospital Employee Committee for $1,000. Two trees that were not bid on were donated to local families in need. Santa and Mrs. Claus delivered the trees to the unsuspecting recipients along with other purchased items.
