WINNEMUCCA - February 2012 marks the third annual observation of Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month. Each February, communities and organizations across the nation focus their attention and efforts on preventing teen dating violence and reaching out to those in their teens and twenties who seek to leave a violent dating relationship.
Teen dating violence occurs any time one member of a teen or twenty-something couple establishes a pattern of behavior designed to control the other person in the relationship, beginning with the first instance of violent behavior toward the boyfriend or girlfriend.
Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services will join efforts to prevent young people from establishing these harmful patterns of behavior, educate them on the warning signs of a potentially abusive boyfriend or girlfriend and offer resources and guidance for any teen or twenty-something who needs assistance in leaving an abusive dating relationship. We will further provide information and guidance for parents, teachers and other caregivers.
Each Monday through Thursday, WDVS posts a new feature article, quiz, short story or other original piece devoted to an issue that impacts our community. All four articles are published on our main page under "News and Features: WDVS Features" on Friday. The first week in February will be devoted to teen dating violence awareness and prevention.
These articles and information on more teen dating violence prevention and awareness projects WDVS will host throughout the month can be found on our two official websites. Our main site is located at www.winnemuccadvs.org. Our Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/WinnemuccaDomesticViolenceShelter.
