WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County Library has a special section called The Nevada Room. It is open for patrons during regular library hours. The Nevada Room holds an abundance of local and state history, available through various mediums, including: microfilm, books, oral histories, files and maps. This invaluable amount of historical information (local and statewide) the Chinatown artifacts on display, the volumes of old photos, and more, made the Nevada Room a mini-museum in 1973.

Humboldt County newspapers dating back to 1863 are on microfilm and available for patrons to view on the library's printer reader. You will find the whole collection of historical (as well as entertaining) articles from The Marden Historical Research Program easily accessible. These articles were written by J.P. Marden while indexing the old newspapers. The Nevada Room Librarian Gillian Napier, has categorized, indexed and compiled the articles into volumes with subject titles to allow for quick and easy research. These articles are also available online through the library system website, www.clan.lib.nv.us/polaris/. The Nevada Room has three drawers containing large geological maps and many other geological and mining maps. There are six file drawers full of gathered information from: newspapers, magazines and other periodicals. The files are labeled under subjects from A to Z. There are two large binders containing old photographs of Humboldt County including Chinatown. You will find mining and other Nevada periodicals past and present, local high school annuals from 1921 to present, the Nevada Revised Statutes and public notices.

There are currently 57 oral histories in The Humboldt County Oral History Program collection. Oral Historians have included: Edie Smith, Linda Dufurrena, Judy Adams and currently Gillian Napier. The oral histories have been transcribed by historians into book form and are available for check out. They offer a wealth of information with firsthand accounts of significant periods of history. The collection contains histories covering a wide range of experiences from the unique viewpoint of Humboldt County residents. They are a very valuable reference tool for those interested in local history and genealogy. The collection includes but is not limited to: Basques, Native Americans, ranchers and Humboldt County business owners. The oral histories are also online through the website, www.clan.lib.nv.us/polaris/.

For those interested in tracing their family roots the Nevada Room has a genealogy collection and a variety of family tree charts.

You will find books on Nevada history, recreation, geography and politics including: rock hounding, hiking, camping, mining, biographies and Nevada fiction. The Nevada Room also contains antique and rare books.
