WINNEMUCCA - The Winners restaurant formerly known as "Grandma's House" has been re-christened the "Star Broiler." With a renovated kitchen and new menu, the Broiler re-opens Friday, Feb. 8, in time for Valentine's Day specials next week.
The new kitchen features a flame broiler - with six steak options topped by the $34 "Ultimate Steak," which has been dry-aged 21 days. Italian entrees and seafood are also featured, along with extensive appetizer, dessert and wine menus.
The Star Broiler is among two restaurants inside the Winners. The other, Pete's Kitchen, adopted a new menu last week that restores its historic mascot, "Pete." Formerly known as the "Winners Hotel and Casino," the Winners itself was also restored recently to its older, simpler name by new owner, Rob Cashell.
The "Star Broiler" name harkens back to Mar. 27, 1958, when Brent Mackie opened his infamous "Star Broiler and Casino" diagonally across from the Winners on Winnemucca Boulevard. Always a lively place, the Star burned to the ground in the 1970s. Legend has it the money from its safe was never found.
The Star was rebuilt in the early '80s by Bob Cashell's Wild West Enterprises. Prior to entering the Nevada gubernatorial race, Cashell sold off his gaming interests, which also included Boomtown, near Reno. Today, the former Star Casino building serves as the Winnemucca Convention Center East Hall.
The Cashells recently returned to Winnemucca, acquiring the Winners and R&L Casino. With Bob currently serving as mayor of Reno, son Rob Cashell presides over Cashell Enterprises.
Cashell commented, "Before the fire at the Star in the '70s, the Star Broiler was the place to eat in Winnemucca. We thought it would be great to bring back the name and some of the nostalgia associated with the Star. Over time we will attempt on the interior to recreate the ambiance of the old Star Broiler."
Besides their new Winnemucca casinos, Cashell Properties operates Alamo Casinos in Sparks, Mill City, and Las Vegas, as well as the upscale Topaz Lodge south of Carson City. Topaz Lodge chefs helped craft the new menus and kitchens at the Winners, which bodes well for the quality of fare, management said.
The Star Broiler Steak House is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5 - 10 p.m. Pete's Kitchen is open 6 a.m. - 11 p.m. Sunday - Thursday, and 6 a.m. - 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information call the Winners at 623-2511, or visit them online at winnerscasino.com
