IMLAY - Despite concerns that the Imlay Auxiliary's Extreme Chili Cook-Off would not have any chili-cooking teams, the event hosted three teams and a 10-vehicle car show over the weekend.

"Everything turned out," said Imlay Auxiliary President Terry Sherbinow.

Sherbinow said she was happy with the addition of another chili team and the amount of people who attended the event.

"Everyone looked like they were having a great time. We (auxiliary members) had a great time putting it on," Sherbinow said.

The winner of the chili cook-off was the Dutch Oven Bunch, who cooked their chili in a Dutch oven. The team members were Winnemucca residents Bill and Tami Riley.

"This was a real cool experience being our first time in a chili cook-off. We've entered Dutch oven contests before but this is our first chili contest. We'll be back next year," Bill Riley said.

Lovelock residents Nikki Larson and Donny Sherbinow won second place. In third place were last year's winners the Country Bumpkin Pumpkin Chili team with Dave Gentry and Natasha Stephens.

Both teams said they had a lot of fun and were looking forward to doing it again next year.

The jury is still out on whether the event will take place for a fourth year.

"Based on the feedback we got today, the possibility for next year looks good but we really have to look at the numbers and see if it is financially feasible. We have to be good stewards with the money we have," Sherbinow said.

She said the auxiliary will have a meeting next week and will make that decision then.

The car show was a big hit with attendees.

The Imlay Auxiliary gave a first place award, based on public voting, to Winnemucca resident John Katzenmeyer for his '47 Ford. Other entries were Junior Lacy's '54 Ford Pickup (Imlay), Rosemary McIntosh and Frank Lewis' '66 Ford Galaxie (Lovelock), Wynn Allred's 2005 Chrysler Crossfire (Winnemucca), Don Jones' 1975 Road Runner (Winnemucca), Sheryl Curtis' 1929 2-Door Model A (Winnemucca) and Walter Curtis' 1930 Model A Roadster Pickup (Winnemucca). Mill City resident Wes Pierce brought three vehicles to the show, a 1946 John Deer Model B Tractor, a McCormick Farmall Super C Tractor and his 1974 CJ5 Jeep.

McIntosh has owned her Galaxie since she was in high school in White Pine County. At that time the sticker price was $3,710. Her baby still has its original license plate.

Jones also has had his Road Runner since high school. There were only 7,100 of this body type and Jones has one of them.

Walter Curtis was recently inducted into the EDGE and TA (Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association) Hall of Fame for preserving history with his Model A pickup and 2-door vehicles. Curtis said he was honored by the induction. The EDGE and TA Hall of Fame is a very prestigious award among those who restore turn of the century vehicles.

All of the car owners from Winnemucca belong to the Coyote Cruisers Car Club.

"Those of us that went to the Imlay Chili Cook-Off and Car Show had a great time. Can't wait for next year, I'm going to try to do my famous chili next year, as well as bring a car. The kids' costumes were fun too," Allred said.

Allred, Lewis and Jones were judges for the costume contest.

For kids, the next best thing to getting candy on Halloween is dressing up. The Imlay Auxiliary tries to provide something for everyone at this event so for the kids it was an extra day they could dress up in their Halloween costumes. Goblins, ghost, witches and fairies; superhero ninjas and cartoon characters paraded between cars and passed by chili kitchens to win the coveted ribbon or at least bragging rights. However, the three winners of the contest may not be aware of what happened to them.

First place ribbon went to 1-year-old Addisen McGillic, who was dressed as a flower and promptly put her ribbon in her mouth. Second place went to 3-month-old Aiden Bradley, dressed as a pumpkin. He proudly displayed his ribbon while he slept. The third place winner was a little livelier. Three-year-old Jonathon White, dressed as Scooby-Doo, was happy to win and proudly showed his ribbon to everyone.

The organizer said they are very happy with the turn out to the chili cook-off but declined to make a definite decision as to whether the event will take place next year.
