WINNEMUCCA - A fire Tuesday evening completely destroyed the detached garage of a Winnemucca home along with the two vehicles parked inside.

Winnemucca Rural Volunteer Fire Department personnel were called out at a little after 8 p.m. on a report of a fire at 4165 Boardwalk (off of Moon Lane in the housing area near Good Morning Furniture).

Assistant Fire Chief Torrey Sheen was the first on scene and served as incident commander. Sheen said the garage was fully engulfed in flames when he and other firemen arrived and their immediate concern was to ensure that the fire didn't spread to the house, which, on one corner, was only five to six feet from the garage.

Sheen said a fire's radiant heat is as much a concern for fire spread as actual flames.

Firemen pumped well over a thousand gallons of water onto the garage and into the area separating the garage and home.

Sheen said firefighters didn't know there were vehicles inside the garage until the fire burned through the garage door and revealed them. There were two pickup trucks, parked one behind the other.

The home's owner was not at home when the fire started. It was reported to sheriff's dispatch which put out the call to Winnemucca rural firefighters.

Sheen said sheriff's dispatch was finally able to locate the homeowner, who talked with firefighters before they left the scene. The cause of the fire was not positively determined.

Winnemucca Rural Volunteer Fire Department had 20 firefighters on scene, along with six trucks, including three tankers, two first-attack trucks and a brush truck.[[In-content Ad]]
