Evelyn (Evy) Marcuerquiaga passed away on Feb. 6, 2014. Born 85 years ago to Pete and Julia Yrueta at the Martin Hotel, she was never far from Winnemucca. It has been six years since a head injury took Evy from her lifelong home, family and friends.

Joseph Dee Marcuerquiaga and Evy married in August 1952. Dee and Evy had two daughters, Darla (Mark) and Juleen. They were also extremely proud of their two grandchildren, Brett (Annelise) and Derek Boge.

After a time at UNR and graduating from Reno Business College, Evy worked as a legal secretary with James Callahan for many years. She then began a second career with the Winnemucca office of Sierra Pacific Power Company. Forever reliable, conscientious, and practical, she never shied from hard work or responsibility.

To know Evy was to experience her kindness, never ending smile, and unassuming attitude toward life. Her family and friends meant everything to her and she made everybody feel welcome in her home with hot coffee, pastries, and excellent meals. She was vibrant and independent, yet dedicated to the needs and care of her family. Her gentle and respectful spirit was reflected back to her even when words were unspoken.

Evy truly lived her life with a servant heart. She was very active in the St. Paul's Catholic Church as a member of the Altar Society, on the finance and Catholic Services Appeal committees, and organizer of the funeral lunches. Other than her church work, her second home was at the Poke and Peek. She loved working with her tight family of friends at "The Poke". Evy was a past president and member of the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary. She also served on the Nevada Mental Health Board of Winnemucca.

Proud of their Basque heritage, Dee and Evy volunteered at the Winnemucca Basque festival. He was behind the scenes, she in her colorful aprons at the dessert booth.

Her stamina and faith were unwavering even during the more difficult days. The family would like to thank all the people who cared for Evy over the past several years.

Evy was preceded in death by her husband, Dee, and daughter, Darla. She is survived by her sister, Eileen Savage; daughter, Juleen Marcuerquiaga; grandsons Brett (Annelise) and Derek Boge; son-in-law, Mark Boge and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary or St. Paul's Altar Society.

She lived a life with dignity and a grace that inspired us all to shine a little brighter.[[In-content Ad]]
