Ernestine Crutcher Coble, 67, of McDermitt, Nev., passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nev.
Born June 19, 1946, in Schurz, Nev., she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Nina (Garfield) Crutcher. She is survived by her son D'Wayne Martin Coble and grandchildren: Tyler James Coble, Tanner David Coble, Tobias Aiden Elordi, and Haley Grace Rowley; brother Carl (Alvina) Crutcher, sister Mary (Leonard) Jackson, brother Wilson (Claudette Ramos) Crutcher, and numerous loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband James Wayne Coble, father Ernest Crutcher, mother Nina (Garfield) Crutcher, sister Margaret Crutcher, brothers Edward Earl Crutcher and Chester Lawrence Crutcher, and nephews Edward Duane Crutcher and Shane Kyle Crutcher.
Ernestine was a lifetime member of the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe in McDermitt, Nev. She graduated from the McDermitt Combined School and Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, Kan. After completing her education in Kansas, Ernestine became a talented seamstress in San Jose, Calif., where she met her husband James Coble and had their son D'Wayne Coble.
Eventually Ernestine moved back to McDermitt, Nev., where she was an active participant in various areas involving the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe. She loved teaching the children as a Head Start teacher. Ernestine was also very politically involved with the tribe; she sat as vice-chairman and as a tribal council member. She was also a member of various committees, such as the Indian Education Committee, the Land Committee, and involved with the Seniors Group. Ernestine also worked with the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada.
Ernestine was extremely passionate about preserving her native Paiute language and did not want the language to be lost so she worked with the Learn and Serve Program teaching the Paiute language to students at the McDermitt Combined High School.
Ernestine was a very active participant in the development of the Travel Plaza currently under construction on the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe.
As a long-time member of the New Life Center Assembly of God on the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Tribe, Ernestine truly enjoyed her involvement with the church.
Ernestine loved spending time with her family and friends and will be forever in our hearts, missed but never forgotten.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the gym at the McDermitt Combined School in McDermitt, Nev. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. at the old high school gym.
The next time you see a butterfly soaring, stop and remind yourself, "That's my future!" No matter how you dress this body up, at best, it will always be a caterpillar. But when it emerges from the cocoon of death and rises to meet the Lord in the air, it will take on His beauty and His likeness.
