RENO - Adorn your home and office walls for the upcoming year with the scenic landscapes of Nevada. A 12-month photo calendar featuring the state's unique geology is on sale now at the University of Nevada, Reno's Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology.
Each month's photo features a different geological formation, including earthquake faults, canyons, limestone and scenic basins. Underneath each photo are captions with facts about the location and geological topic.
The calendar is $10 and available online. It can also be purchased on the University at the Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library, the Sundance Bookstore and the Flag Store. The Nevada Wolf Shop in the Joe Crowley Student Union are expected to have calendars soon. Online purchasers can have it shipped, downloaded or picked up on the University. Those who purchase 10 calendars or more will receive a discount of 41 percent or more. Free topographic or geologic map wrapping papers are available for those who bring in a donation to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
Designed by the Bureau of Mines and Geology's Jack Hursh, Jennifer Mauldin, Christ Henry and Nick Hinz, the calendar is composed of photos taken by Geological Society of Nevada members and local contestants. Contest winners include Lane Griffin, Ken Krahulec, Steve Howell and Mark Abrams, and their photos can be seen in the calendar (January, July, November and the Nevada Geology photo, respectively).
The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology is a statewide research and public service department headquartered in the Mackay School of Earth Science and Engineering. The department provides information, research and education in all areas of geology, and conducts the state geological survey.
