What a busy month this has been! Santa and I have visited northern Nevada several times and have enjoyed visiting with many of you. I am so grateful for all the hugs and caring that has been shown to Santa and me. There were several conversations that were very memorable and I thought that I could share parts of them with you as my last gift of the year.
I met a young lady named Emily at Round Table Pizza in Winnemucca. Emily wondered how I knew her name and when I explained that the elves keep us up on not only children's names, but their status on the "nice list," she wanted to know how they could know all that "stuff."
Well, Emily, Santa and I are always amazed at the network that the elves have created. In fact Gmail maps borrowed some of the elf technology to use at their site! The elves can tell us within a matter of minutes, who is on the naughty or nice list, where they are located and what they are doing at that very moment. In the song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," it is sung, "He sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake, he knows when you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake." It is true and all that knowledge is thanks to the brilliance and technology of the elves!
As Santa and I were talking to the children on our last visit, a young man asked Santa where all the puppies and kittens, bunnies, iguanas, snakes, birds, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, ponies, horses, goats, pot-bellied piglets , tarantulas and the like came from that arrived in homes on Christmas morning.
These very special beings are no little undertaking for Santa or for those welcoming their new pet into their home. Santa must look into the heart of the parent to see if they approve of having the responsibility of another family member - sometimes parents cannot take that responsibility, so a pet cannot be brought to that child. However, if the parent is of a good heart for this, Santa lets the elves know and they contact animal shelters or families that have puppies, kittens, iguanas, hamsters, etc., all over the world to find just the right pet for the child. Then the elves have to coordinate the pick-up and delivery of the pet because it is often too cold on the sleigh to keep such a young animal there for very long. It is complicated, but the gift of a pet to a home where it is wanted and will be cared for is like Christmas all year round!
Santa and I look forward to attending the Humboldt County Kidz n'Cops event every year. Each year we meet such special young people, from the young children that are selected to shop, the law enforcement that open their hearts to spend their morning with a child in need, to the apprentice wrapping "elves" that are from various youth groups all over Humboldt County. I want you to know that you all inspire and awe Santa and me. We believe that your volunteerism embodies the spirit of Christmas!
This year at this event, the sister of one of the shoppers whispered, "Mrs. Claus, does Santa really love you like my Grandpa loves my Grandma?" This touched my heart and the answer is, yes. Santa's heart is so full of love that he loves me, the elves, the reindeer, the animals and all the children of the world and he loves us all with so much richness that we are all better because of it. Santa has a way of making me feel very special - sometimes he will take my hand, sometimes he will just look at me and smile, but Santa loves me as I truly love him. Santa and I have been married since 1889. We gave a nice young man, James Rees in Philadelphia (where I originated), the exclusive story which he wrote in "The Christmas Legend." Every day that I have been married to Santa has been filled with the joy of Christmas!
Another little girl at the event asked me why Santa and I did not have children of our own. Santa and I have been given the gift of the world's children to watch over and love. You are our own children and we love you very much.
I must return to the North Pole and ready Santa for his upcoming Christmas Eve trip. Santa and I have enjoyed our visits with you and I have appreciated the e-mails that you have sent to askmrsclaus@gmail.com. It is wonderful to hear from you and I will continue to respond to your letters through the New Year. Santa and I wish you happy Christmas wishes. As Tiny Tim says in "The Christmas Story," "God Bless Us Every One!"
With Love and Christmas Hugs,
Santa Maria Claus
