BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School sixth-grade students recently took part in a project-based learning class.
"Scale City" was a culminating project for the sixth graders in the study of ratio and scale. After several weeks investigating the use of scale with pencil and paper, the students were challenged to build a scale city. The city used a match box car, a 1969 Chevy Nova, as its reference. The students were given the original measurements of a '69 Nova and had to find the scale to which the match box car had been reduced to.
Using this information they drew lots to see what their contribution to the city would be. Next they worked in partners to sketch their buildings and draw scale blueprints on graph paper. Once their blueprints were approved by the city engineer, Mrs. Lemaire, they were given permission to build. Students were encouraged to reuse, recycle or re-purpose material for the construction of their building. The city was erected in the gym with the direction of several students who drew the job of city planner.
Lemaire would like to thank Joe Lindsey for his help with Lander County building codes and requirements, the support of the ELES staff and the students for such an outstanding job.
