BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School (ELES) students held their annual Christmas Musicals during the first part of December.
The fourth-grade students presented "A Curious Case: The Missing Signs of Christmas" on Tuesday, Dec. 6. They held two different showings, with one at 1:30 p.m. and another at 6 p.m. to accommodate the many different work schedules of the students' families.
Under the direction of part-time music teacher Judy Dahl, the students spent several weeks practicing and refining their performances before the big day when their friends and families would come to watch them shine.
ELES fourth-grade teachers Angie Campbell, Jenny Kern and Susan Sandru assisted Dahl during the practices to help ensure that their 73 students stayed on task and made the most of their limited practice times learning the songs and any solo lines they might have throughout the hour-long musical.
The performance begins with all students singing along to "It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas." The attentive audience listened in as the youngsters presented a total of 10 wonderfully festive melodies that included well-known hits such as "Frosty the Snowman," "Christmas is Here Again" and "Here Comes Santa Claus."
While each class was given the opportunity to individually sing one song, the majority of them were jointly performed by all three classes.
The students engaged in some superbly choreographed dances, showing off their fancy footwork as they trotted along to many popular holiday tunes such as "Jingle Bells, Country Style."
Each and every one of them looked absolutely adorable in the costumes made by Dahl and parent volunteers.
"A Curious Case: The Missing Signs of Christmas" is a tale of several children noticing that the usual signs of Christmas - snow, presents, Christmas trees and lights - are missing! They go on an adventure to find them in order save Christmas.
They first journey to England to talk to Mr. Scrooge and meet a group of carolers on the street. Scrooge sends them to Tennessee, where Miss SuzyQue Snowflake is incognito due to the stress of delivering snow every Christmas. Upon visiting with her, she sends them to see Frosty. Although the Snowchildren are having fun playing, they learn that Frosty has gone "underground."
Faced with their current dilemma, the children decide to go to the North Pole, where they are greeted by Santa and his reindeer. Santa studies the situation and decides that his three mischievous elves may have stolen the signs to get out of the hard work Christmas entails. The elves return the signs and the choir rejoices with "Christmas is Here Again" - the finale.
