ELES fifth graders take part in Invention Convention

The unit of study took about five weeks and used skills from the entire curriculum. Students took surveys, researched established products, designed display boards, wrote a marketing plan, presented their inventions to judges and had to create a working model of their idea.

Upon completion of their invention, students competed for cash prizes, which were graded on Creativity, Originality, Complexity, Practicality, Contribution to Society, Oral Presentation and the effectiveness of their Display Boards.

Judges for the event were Cathy Updike (PTA representative), Bill Cox (high school science teacher), Jaren Whitehead (high school senior) and Anna Penola (school board member).

Prizes were awarded at an evening exhibition on May 17.

Kyle Wilson won First Place Overall Best Invention with his "Narrow Barrel" space-saving, folding wheel-barrel. Second place went to Alondra Moreno for a wagon seat intended to keep kids from burning skin on hot days, entitled "Anti-Heat Wagon Seat." Julia Ramirez received a place prize for her "Warm Eyes" invention, which warms contact solution up to a non-shocking, tolerable level.

Other winners were Kade Quintana's "Flipping Flippers" (Best Outdoor Invention), Isabela Deallah's "Feezicle" (Best Indoor Invention), Halle Rogers's "Yummy Cup" (Most Marketable), Trista McKenzie's "Handy Crutch" (Most Beneficial to Humanity), Matthew Narramore's "The Beeper" (Most Technologically Advanced), Trey Whitehead's "No Mess Oil Changer" (Male Choice), Drue Domagala's "D.C.
