BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The fifth-grade students at Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School presented their Christmas musical "A Show-Stopping Christmas" to their friends and families on Wednesday, Dec. 7. In order to accommodate the varying work schedules of the students' family members, they held two showings, with one at 1:30 p.m. and another at 6 p.m.

The students worked hard readying themselves for their big day, when they would dazzle their loved ones with their holiday song and dance numbers. The students practiced for several weeks, for 30 to 45 minutes at a time under the direction of part-time music teacher Judy Dahl. Kristine Taylor accompanied on the piano.

While each of the three fifth-grade classes got to play their recorders, the students sang a total of 10 festive songs. "A Show-Stopping Christmas" was an hour-long presentation of holiday hits such as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Up on the Housetop" and "Jolly Old St. Nicholas." It also included several other lesser-known melodies like "Shout!" "The Santa Claus Rock" and "Hap, Hap, Happy Snowman."

"A Show-Stopping Christmas" is a revue of some of the new, upbeat songs of Christmas entwined with old, familiar carols. The elves get everyone hopping with "The North Pole Rock and Roll." Frosty gets animated when the children place that old silk hat upon his head. Suzy leads the Snowflakes and Snowmen in dancing the Christmas polka. The reindeer follow Rudolph on a delivery adventure, and the toy parade reminds every one of the joys of Christmas.
