BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Students at Battle Mountain elementary schools celebrated Nevada Reading Month March 11 - 21. The theme for this year was "Read it! Dream it! Do it!"
The first day started with the "Reading Pledge" read by Superintendent Jim Squibb. Students were involved in all kinds of activities, including making wishing stars and dreamcatchers, DEAR (drop everything and read), Cuddle Up and Read, poetry rap, RIF and a visit by author Ken Baker.
During the activities they learned about how they could make their own dreams come true if they worked hard for them. They also learned about people that had worked hard to accomplish big dreams, such as Martin Luther King, Walt Disney, Anna Pavlova and Korzak Ziolkowski.
During the first week, the PTA brought author Ken Baker in to provide some fun entertainment with his musical storytelling and story creation presentations.
Baker lives in Utah with his wife and five children. He writes children's books and had two new books published in October 2012. The students who had purchased one of his new books, "Old McDonald Had a Dragon" and "The Cow Can't Sleep," were able to visit with the author during the book signing.
In the second week, the Poetry Rap contest began. The third graders have been learning about rap music from music teacher Mrs. Staton.
Then they picked out a poem or rhyming book and began a rap-off in their classrooms. Of course the third grade teachers knew the best way to help their students with the rap was to demonstrate.
On Tuesday, the "T-Rappers" (third grade teachers) showed their rapping skills. On Wednesday, the whole school came to the white gym to pick the best rapper.
The eight finalists were Jade Castellanos, Cannyn Bundy, Rosa Munoz, Fernando Crespo, Marissa Gamble, Aydan Samuelson, Jonathan Narramore and Jaione Garcicea.
All the students did a great job but Rappen Rosa, the Rebel Munoz and Lil Digits Samuelson proved they could rap by tying for first place.
Nevada Reading Month ended with a cuddle up and read on Thursday. The students wore comfy clothes and had pillows, blankets and each other to end the day reading.
A special thanks to Micky Tolbert, Rachael Black, Michele Cason, Beckie Blanthorn, Lupe Jacobsen, Cindy Heese, Tasha Sill, Alma Guzeman, Hollie Allred, Stacy Soule, Mary Bengoa, Santi Villanueva, Jennifer King, Lisa Clark, Michelle Castaneda, The Owl Club, Super 8 Motel and the PTA for all their help making the activities possible.
