BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The students in Judy Dahl's sixth-grade choir, band and guitar classes held their annual Christmas concert on Wednesday, Dec. 7, when they performed "North Pole Diaries."
The students are split up amongst Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School sixth-grade teachers Mindi Hammill, Suzanne Lemaire, Dave Fuller and Carly Robertson. They had been practicing multiple times a week for over a month, making sure they had the songs memorized, the beats to the various songs they would be playing and the chords perfect as they strummed along to the wonderfully festive tunes that typically accompany the holiday season.
The show consisted of eight songs that the 44 choir students performed, along with short skits. The musical was a reflection of the various North Pole characters entering into a computer-
generated diary, and the events leading up to Christmas Eve.
Preston Campbell (Santa) presented "North Pole Diaries," telling how the elves had been busy all year long, and that the Christmas rush had begun. With so much to do in such a short time, they must all get busy.
Orion Bean, Alaina Post, Rosie Ohrt, Marissa Rogers, Keetna Smith, Autumn Thunehorst and Bailey Mulligan presented "Gettin' Ready for Christmas." They listed the many important things that are associated with the holiday, such as the snow and ice, the gifts, the beautiful lights and mistletoe, and of course Santa Claus and the New Year.
"Born to Shop" had Illiana Fotsch (Elf 1) explaining that with all the stress of building so many toys for all the good little boys and girls how unprepared she was, and how much easier it would be to just go to the North Pole shopping mall and buy them all because she was a shopaholic elf after all.
In "Santa Wants a Brand New Bag," Shayleah George (Mrs. Claus) tells how difficult it is to give a gift to her husband, Santa Claus. In the past she had given him many great gifts that he didn't seem to like, including a cowboy hat and sweaters. She wanted this year's gift to be a hit, so she decides to make him what he needs most, a brand new bag!
Hania Amezcua, Marbella Dias Torres, Abby Okrzesik, Sarah Berumen, Crystal Escobedo, Caitlyn Cosper, Jasmine Lopez, Dominique Mace, Gisselle Martinez and Gabby Gerard sang along with "Santa Wants a Brand New Bag."
Cameron Thompson (North Pole Chief of Staff) starts out by reading his diary entry in which he details the daily stresses of being Santa's right-hand man. He tells of all the work that he must do every day to make sure that the most special day of the year is perfect. This leads into all the students singing "Santa Needs A Vacation."
"Hip-Hop Reindeer" had Reese Artz, Reggie Wheeler, Bowden Hughes, DeAndre Powell, Jake Legarza, Ricky Guizar Diaz, Shilo Burkhart and Payton Ayers telling how the reindeer have decided to try a new way of getting into shape for their big night of flight. Since all the reindeer like to dance, this will be their new form of exercise.
This jingle is followed by all the students singing "Up, Up, Up in the Sleigh" featuring Ricky Guizar Diaz, Payton Ayers and Shilo Burkhart as mechanics and Ashley Lee, Evelyn Paralta, Sarah Berumen, Jade Smith, Marissa Rogers, Madison Wahrenburg, Paige Reinholz and Paige Ripley as reindeer.
Preston Campbell (Santa) stepped back in to wrap things up. In this last diary entry dated Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, he tells how grateful he is that all the North Pole jobs got done because everyone worked together and helped spread Christmas cheer.
The finale for the sixth-grade choir Christmas musical had all the students unite to sing "North Pole Diaries."
Students in the sixth-grade guitar class strummed out three tunes. They played to "Jingle Bells," "This Land is Your Land" and "Rock Around the Clock." Guitarists included Reese Artz, Shilo Burkhart, Jenna Colgan, Anthony Davis, Quinton Defoor, Jesse Edgar, Crystal Escobedo, Adrian Gonzalez, Anthony Lewis, Jasmine Lopez, Braden McIntosh, Gabe Naveran, Rosie Ohrt, Paige Ripley, Ezra Rogers, Luis Salutregui, Autumn Thunehorst, Carlos Tovar, Madison Wahrenburg and Reggie Wheeler.
The students in Judy Dahl's sixth-grade band class include Sarah Berumen and Sammy Jones (flutes); Hania Amezcua, Aspen Edelffson and Iliana Fotsch (clarinets); Shayleah George, Alexa Goddard and Gisselle Martinez (alto saxophones); Abby Okresik (violin); Mason Chopp, Marc Cruz Camacho, Marbella Dias Torres, Mason Fuller, DeAndre Powell, Jade Smith, Brody Young and Reggie Wheeler (trumpets); Angelica Penola (French horn); Autumn Thunehorst (trombone); Keetna Smith (piano); and Jake Legarza, Paige Reinholz, Marissa Rogers and Emilio Vasquez (percussion).
The students performed a total of five songs that included hits such as "A Mozart Melody," "Jingle Bells," "Up on the Housetop," "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" and "Power Rock."
