Eighth graders come of age Formal dance held for middle schoolers

LOVELOCK - Pershing County Middle School eighth graders danced the night away at their first formal dance, held on May 4 at Sturgeon's Center Club. The dance, organized by the students' parents and grandparents, featured a "Candy Land" theme, complete with a chocolate fountain and white chocolate-covered cotton candy.

Each year the parents of eighth-grade students organize a formal dance for their children.

A nominal fee of $5 or $10 was charged in the past, but this year's dance was free.

Parent organizer Darla Barrick said the event was free this year because of all the donations for the dance.

"We had so many wonderful people help us put on this dance, it was great. We can't thank them enough," Barrick said.

The dance was attended by all but four students. Barrick attributed the full attendance to the dance being free.

"We would have had to charge the students if Drew (Skeen) at Sturgeon's hadn't donated the Center Club and all the soda," she said. "We had so many people that gave large donations that we wouldn't be able to name them all. But that really freed up the parents to put on a really fun dance for the kids. They had a blast."

Barrick expressed further appreciation for Joey Tulasoa, who served as disc jockey for the dance for free, and Val Brinkerhoff, who donated over 100 balloons.
