LOVELOCK - On cue, 6,120 hard-boiled and dyed Easter eggs were snatched from grassy fields outside Lovelock on Sunday.
"Six hours of work and it's over in 20 minutes," joked Jeff Campbell, vice president of the Lovelock Eagles, the organization that sponsors the annual event.
About a dozen volunteers prepped the eggs before spreading them on the fields Sunday morning, he said.
"We hard-boiled and dyed them last night at the Catholic Hall."
Around 350 children scrambled for the 510 dozen eggs scattered across three baseball diamonds at the MacDougal Sports Complex. The Easter Sunday tradition started at least 30 years ago at the courthouse park in downtown Lovelock, Campbell said.
Announcer Rocky Ging, 89, gave instructions to the crowd through loud-speakers mounted on his 1991 GMC pickup. "It's something I can do sitting down," he said from inside his truck's cab.
Prizes and six bicycles were given away to those who found the "special" eggs, Campbell said.
Photo sessions of children with the Easter Bunny and the Coca Cola Bear earned $50 for Relay for Life, according to Valaree Clifton, co-chair of the local Relay for Life. The organization raises money for the American Cancer Society for cancer research.
