'Dyslexia Solved' class offered at GBC

Interactive video will stream to Winnemucca

ELKO - Great Basin College is offering "Dyslexia Solved: A Guide for Parents and Teachers of Struggling Readers" on two Wednesdays from 5:30 - 6:45 p.m., this Feb.5 and 12 at Great Basin College in Elko. Due to popularity, interactive video sites have been added and the class will be broadcast to the Winnemucca Center room 109, Ely room 105, Battle Mountain computer lab, Pahrump room 124, and West Wendover Elementary School Modular 7.

According to the International Dyslexia Association website, dyslexia is the most common cause of reading, writing, and spelling difficulties. Of people with poor reading skills, 70 - 80 percent are likely dyslexic. One in five American students currently has a language-based learning disability, and less than 1/3 of the children with reading disabilities are receiving school services for their reading disability.

This course is for those who may or may not have been previously diagnosed as being dyslexic and is being taught by George Manilla, M.D. who is dyslexic himself and has helped many students overcome dyslexia. Co-instructor, Joe de Braga, M.Ed., former principal and director of curriculum and technology for Elko County School District will present new research on dyslexia and methods to improve reading comprehension and writing skills.

Participants will learn to detect the symptoms associated with dyslexia and understand the causes.
