BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Dunphy Complex fires north of Carlin were made up of three distinct fires, including the Izzenhood, Chukar Canyon and Indian Creek fires. They erupted on Sept. 30 due to lightning and consumed nearly 205,000 acres.
A Bureau of Land Management news release on Oct. 5 reported that rain on the two previous days assisted firefighters in withdrawing resources from the Chukar Canyon and Indian Creek fires. The Indian Creek Fire was also reported to have burned trash in abandoned mine shafts and that historic mine structures, livestock and horses were lost in the fire.
As per BLM's news release of Oct. 5, fire statistics are as follows:
Indian Creek Fire: 110,907 acres - 20 percent contained; at a cost of $809,021.
Izzenhood Fire: 42,190 acres - 90 percent contained; at a cost of $919,598.
Chukar Canyon Fire: 51,390 acres - 60 percent contained; at a cost of $161.375.
Total Complex acres: 204,487 - at a cost of $1,889,994.
Total resources as of Oct. 4: 754 (plus the Incident Management Team and support staff), including Type 1 and Type 2 hand crews, engines, dozers, water tenders, single-engine air tankers, helicopters and air-attack platforms.
The BLM coordinated with volunteer firefighters, the City of Elko, local ranchers and mining operation staff to bring these fires into containment and control.
