Doris Damon Spitzer died peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2013, surrounded by her family.
A native Nevadan, she was born in Elko, Nevada, on September 27, 1917. Doris thrived in a happy home with her parents Ernest S. and Consuella Damon, brother, Ernest H., and sister, Ruth. When she was a young child, her family moved to Winnemucca where she lived for most of the next thirty-five years making lifelong friends and becoming the student body president of Humboldt County High School (now Lowry High) in her senior year. After graduation, she attended business school in Salt Lake City and even took flying lessons. She met Bob, her husband of 62 years, at a dance in Winnemucca, and they were married in July, 1939. Reno became their home in 1957.
Nothing was more important to Doris than her family. She was a remarkable woman and her family benefitted from her generous, kind, caring spirit. She was a role model who gave of her time and energy to Rainbow Girl and scout groups as well as being active in Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, and PEO chapter T for 56 years. In later years, Doris and Bob enjoyed their Maui condo and generously shared it with family and friends. They traveled to many different countries, but being with family was still what made Doris the happiest.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Spitzer (2001), her parents, and two siblings, Ernest H. Damon and Ruth Garn Wilson.
She will be profoundly missed and always remembered by all her children, Barbara Phipps (George), Carolyn Banis (Rick), Robert Damon Spitzer, and David Damon Spitzer; and grandchildren, Stephen Haney (Debbie), Darryl Haney, Lisa Schuster (John), Gary Banis, Sierra, Damon, and Paris Spitzer and Amy, Dan, and Eric Spitzer. Also surviving are seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
The family wishes to thank Elaine Serra, Rose Rosalia, and Aida Kanowitz for the daily gentle help they gave Doris during the last several years. They made a tremendous difference in her life as well as in our lives, and their commitment to our family is greatly appreciated. Our gratitude also extends to Life Care and especially Dr. David Julian for their attentive care.
Following Doris' wishes, the family will have a private gathering to celebrate her life.
