Donald Lee Schlund

Donald Lee Schlund was born on April 16, 1929, in Cairo, Neb., to Everett and Leona Thompson Schlund. Don passed away in Battle Mountain on May 4 with his wife and daughter by his side.

Don grew up in Nebraska and later moved to Denver, Colo. Don attended college in Nebraska where he was a member of the wrestling team. Don went to work in the mining industry as a mechanic in Wyoming and then later in Nevada where Don retired from Echo Bay Minerals.

Don enjoyed working in his yard and supporting his grandchildren in their activities. Don loved his pigeons and was always eager to share his knowledge about the birds. Don was also known as the "bicycle guy" who made it his passion that every child had a bike to ride, and was always willing to work on someone's bike.

Don married Jolanda de Rijk in 1981 in Fort Bridger, Wyo.

Don is survived by his wife Jolanda, daughters Diane (Aaron) Dorman, Leanne (Edgar) De Jesus, and son Nick Schlund. Grandchildren Cody (Amanda) Dorman, Kalee Jo Dorman, Dylan Nix, Brianna, Sienna, and Jaden De Jesus and great grandsons Michael and Mathew Dorman, and a brother Brad Schlund. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Gloria, Beth and Barbara, brothers Terry and Dick.

Don always had a joke or a smile for everyone. He was many things to many people, a wonderful husband, great father, loving grandfather, gifted painter and was always ready for a lively debate. He certainly will be greatly missed.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Catholic Church. Don's favorite charities were St. Jude's and Boy's Town.
