Donald George Peters Jr., 65, of Winnemucca passed away peacefully on Sept. 5, 2013, at home with his wife and two sons by his side. He was born Feb. 16, 1948, to Donald George Peters Sr. and Esther Peters.
He spent his childhood in Los Angeles (South Gate), Calif., before moving to Denio, Nev., in 1963 where his family built, owned and operated the Denio Junction.
During this time, Don attended Humboldt County High School and earned varsity letters in both football and baseball. He was the starting fullback on the 1965 State Championship football team.
After graduation, Don acquired a pilot's license in order to help distribute supplies and parts to the junction and serve as a hunting guide for the Denio area.
After moving to Winnemucca, Don became involved in many community organizations. He was a longstanding member of the Kiwanis Club and an original board member of the Winnemucca Century Club, which is still active today. Don also committed 25 years of service and hard work as a volunteer fireman for the city of Winnemucca. Don could also be found working the chains on the sidelines at Lowry football games or coaching Little League baseball for many years.
On March 31, 1973, Don married Jessell de Arrieta. Over the past 40 years, Don and Jessell worked side-by-side, starting off as owners of Dyer Lumber Company then building Spare Time Bowling Center from the ground up, making it the successful business it is today. Through these businesses, Don gave generously to our community and established many long-term relationships with local business owners, bowlers and his loyal employees.
He is survived by Jessell, his loving wife of 40 years, son Chad (Dana), grandson Cal, son Eric (Julie) and grandchildren Logan and Maggie, all of Winnemucca. As well as daughter Melonie, grandchildren Darryl, Kayla, Rylee, and Tyler, son Corey, grandchildren Ciena and Rachel. Also, his sister Linda Willer, nephew Kevin and sister Debbie Odette, nephew Casey and niece Stacey.
Don was also blessed with many life-long friends that were an important part of his daily life. His big smile will be missed and could be seen on the golf course, on the bowling lanes, on his boat fishing with friends or attending one of his son's or grandchildren's events.
