Feb. 12, a meeting was held in the conference room at the Humboldt County School District office. The meeting was to voice concerns of how the Criterion Reference Tests will be administered this year in classrooms around Humboldt County.
Given that the Nevada Revised Statutes and the Procedures for the Nevada Proficiency Examination Program clearly state the district school board is responsible for adopting and enforcing the testing program, on Feb. 11 all school board members were addressed and invited to attend the Feb. 12 meeting to hear the concerns of the teachers, parents and students.
Attendance was high; each elementary school was well represented as well as the middle school. Administrators from each school were in attendance along with the district administrators.
Not a single school board member attended the meeting. How are they going to be knowledgeable of issues arising in our district when they don't attend meetings such as these? In fact, NRS 389.628 dictates that all concerns regarding irregularities be reported to the district board of trustees.
Even though the decision to administer the test different from other counties in Nevada has an impact on every student K-8 who participates in the high stakes testing, not a single board member took the time to attend the meeting.
This was too important of an issue to not have any representation by our Humboldt County School Board. Is that what we want when it concerns our students, teachers, schools, and Humboldt County School District?
Very disappointed,
