Editor:
Recently I had to make a local court appearance on behalf of my dog. My dog was accused of maiming our neighbor’s goats and causing indirect damage to the property. To be short, I don’t blame my neighbor for wanting compensation from someone for her loss of the goats. Some dogs did cause the damage, just not mine. My dogs had been seen on varmint control on our property adjoining the neighbors. They assumed because of previous sightings, my dog was guilty.
Again, I bear no hard feeling for the accusations. However, based on the “eye-witness” account and the investigating officer’s report, the testimonies did not match. Nothing was adding up to prove my dog’s guilt. Even a lay person as myself reading the testimonies and looking at the photos taken by the investigating officers would point to my dog.
I have lived in Lander County for close to 40 years and consider it my home. I am so sorry, disappointed and disgusted with our District Attorneys office for spending tax-payers’ time and money on such an obviously frivolous case. The resources put forth for this case would have had a much bigger impact spent on some other case with a real criminal base. This whole case made our Lander County District Attorneys office look so inefficient and foolish. I do regret this whole incident and how it reflects on my home town.
Possibly, with more experience and more thought, our DA’s office will get more competent. I sincerely hope so.
