Humboldt General Hospital's Diabetes Support Group will discuss "Diabetes and How It Affects Our Bodies".
The group will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. tonight in the hospital's Sonoma conference room; Humboldt General Hospital Director of Nutrition and Dietary Services Tiffani Nalivka will lead the evening's discussion.
Diabetics, pre-diabetics, caregivers and those who are interested in preventing diabetes are invited to attend.
Nalivka said nearly 10 percent of the population has diabetes, although about 30 percent of those with diabetes are undiagnosed. Diabetes is also the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
"Early detection is key," said Nalivka. "Early detection and treatment of diabetes can decrease the risk of developing complications like kidney disease, high blood pressure, stroke and even blindness."
She added, "This month's discussion will provide a great overview of this disease and how it really affects our bodies."
The Diabetes Support Group is facilitated by Nalivka and Humboldt General Hospital Wellness Coordinator Louis Mendiola.
