Humboldt General Hospital's Diabetes Support Group will discuss kidney disease at its next meeting.
The group will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the hospital's Sonoma conference room; HGH Wellness Coordinator Louis Mendiola will lead the evening's discussion.
Diabetics, pre-diabetics, caregivers and those who are interested in preventing diabetes are invited to attend.
Kidneys are remarkable organs. Inside are millions of tiny blood vessels that act as filters; their job is to remove waste products from the blood.
"But sometimes this filtering system breaks down," said Mendiola. "Diabetes can damage the kidneys and cause them to lose their ability to filter out waste products, resulting in kidney disease." The good news, according to Mendiola, is not everyone with diabetes develops kidney disease.
"The even better news," he said, "is the better a person keeps diabetes and blood pressure under control, the lower the chance of getting kidney disease."
The Diabetes Support Group is facilitated by Mendiola and Humboldt General Hospital Director of Nutrition and Dietary Services Tiffani Nalivka.
The group provides a casual setting where participants can ask questions and get information relative to their personal situation.
