DENIO - For 51 years running, the small community of Denio, Nevada, has held the Denio Barbecue and Play Day on the first Saturday of June. The venue includes a team branding, team roping, and kids' Jr. Rodeo held at the Denio Arena. New this year was a Jr. Branding competition which proved to be very popular. In addition, at the Community Hall a quilt show and barbeque featured a delicious meal of steak, chorizos, salads, beans, bread and dessert. Dancing to a live band wrapped up the evening.
In the 2014 arena events, the team branding winners were Tim Maher, Monel Shelley, Jake Brennon and Ross O'Sullivan. The Jr. Branding was won by Wyatt and Dani Clark with Jeremy and Jake Clark. Jesse Northrup and Kenny Haigh topped the team roping.
The kids events and Jr. rodeo feature five different age groups with activities for children ages 0 to 15. Along with Sheep Riding, Stick Horse Barrels, Barrel Racing, and Dummy Roping, children participate in more non-traditional events such as the Potato Race, Figure 8 Race, Goat Un-Decorating, and many more. Every child who took part received prizes provided by the generous support and donations of numerous sponsors. The All-Around winners for the kids events included: Zoe Weagant, Will Wolverton, Tommy Jack Rose, Jace Grenke, and Kenadee Miller. Tommy Jack Rose and Lexi Garijo were named "High-Point Cowboy and Cowgirl." Thank you to all who came and helped make this year a success!
