David Emmet Harrison

David Emmet Harrison died in Lovelock on Oct. 23, 2012, at the age of 51.

Born Aug. 24, 1961, in Palo Alto, Calif., David became the third and final child of Robert A. and Marilyn J. Harrison, all sons.

His father's career with IBM led to a string of promotions and relocations which took the family away from the Bay Area before David's first birthday, first to New York City, then Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Denver again, all before David turned 8. At this time, the couple made a decision to settle and raise their three boys in Colorado.

As a young athlete David was active in Little League baseball. As a teenager he excelled as a ski racer. In high school he co-captained the swim team to a Colorado state championship.

In 1979, David graduated from Littleton High School with the distinction of Most Outstanding Student. His picture is permanently displayed in the school's Hall of Fame.

Further academic achievement includes Phi Beta Kappa honors and a BA in Classical Literature from Stanford University. Later, David would graduate from the University of Washington Medical School, earning his M.D.

Following a period of years during which he struggled mightily with serious and debilitating personal health issues, David came to Lovelock in August of 2005 to work on the farm of relative Dick McDougal. Very slowly yet surely, with mysterious and beautiful forces at work, restoration and healing began to occur. Somehow the authenticity and humility of rural life connected with David, and vice versa; Lovelock become his home.

Writing for the Review-Miner the past few years offered an opportunity to contribute to and cement a relationship with the community he had come to love. For David, covering sports went far beyond wins and losses, scores and stats - he was genuinely invested in revealing the human element of his subject matter whenever possible. Because of this sincerity, David had a special rapport with local athletes of all ages in all sports, often extending to their families. David also enjoyed covering other events of local interest whenever the opportunity presented itself. Combining his obvious gift for writing with his heart for people, he had found his calling.

David Emmet Harrison is survived by his mother, Marilyn; his brothers, Douglas and Patrick; his nephews - the "young lions" - Dylan and Gavin, all of Centennial, Colo.; and his beloved cat, Miss Emma, of Lovelock. The family is currently planning an occasion for sharing memories, feelings and reflections about David in the near future in Lovelock, date and time to be determined.
