Daniel Ugalde was born Sept. 3, 1927 at 9 Mile Ranch. He passed away Oct. 7, 2013, at Renown Hospital, Reno, Nev. He was seventh of eight children born to Juan Antonio Ugalde and Paula Maria Erquiaga Ugalde. Dan was the only one of the children born at the 9 mile Ranch.
He went to the 8th grade in Kings River Valley. Because of the large family, he and some of his brothers and sisters had to work away from the ranch. Dan spent two years in the army, Korea. He was a rancher.
Dan married Sammye Johnstone Sept. 13, 1952. They lived in Winnemucca. He worked for a while at the Getchell Mine and then for John Tallman when John first purchased the Lumber Company. Sammye and Dan moved back to 9 Mile Ranch to help his mother Paula and brother Emilio. They later purchased the ranch from Paula and raised their four children, Eddyann, John, Frank and Robert, there. Son John and his wife Renae bought the ranch and Dan and Sam moved to Lakeview, Oregon. Semi-retired, the two of them worked together refinishing furniture for people. The ranch called them home again after the loss of their son Bob.
Daniel is survived by his wife (of 61 years) Sammye, children Eddyann and Dan Filippini, John and Renae Ugalde, Frank Ugalde, daughter-in-law Julia Ugalde. Grandchildren Max Filippini, Mary Filippini, Hank Filippini, Victor Ugalde and Sam Ugalde and great granddaughter Brooke Ro Filippini, brother Adolpho Ugalde, sister-in-law Donna Ugalde and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Bob, brothers Jaime, Emilio and Theodore, sisters Aurelia, Helen and Anna, nephews Tony Ugalde and Gene Jones.
Dad loved 9 Mile and Kings River Valley, his family and his wonderful friends, neighbors and his dog Creep. He will surely be missed by all who knew him. God has a special man in his arms now.
Dan requested no service. His wish was to be cremated and put on "the hill" with his son and his brother.
