DA mulling charges for Ray Williams III offenses

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County District Attorney Angie Elquist said her office is still reviewing the alleged offenses for Justice of the Peace candidate Ray Williams III, and she said she will let the Bugle know when a decision is made. She said she is engaged in negotiations.

Williams was arrested May 3 for resisting a public officer, turn signals required and suspicion of DUI above the legal limit, second offense.

He was arrested again by Lander County sheriff's deputies on May 16 for allegedly driving on a revoked driver's license for DUI. The traffic violations of turn signals required and driving on a revoked driver's license offenses were slated to be heard in the Austin Justice Court Aug. 7, but all of the alleged offenses may now be considered at one time on one date, according to justice court officials.

According to justice court officials, contact has been made with Williams' attorney, Hy Forgeron. No further court date has been set yet.

The July 2 arraignments for the alleged traffic violations for Williams were continued to Aug. 7.

According to court records, the cases were continued while the parties engage in preliminary plea negotiations.

In both instances, he was released from jail on his own recognizance.

Williams said previously that he is a lifelong Austin resident. In the Justice of the Peace race, he is running against former Lander County Deputy District Attorney Bill Schaeffer.
