Paula Tomera, who took over as executive director of the Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority Feb. 1, said she is planning to add new elements to already-existing events. She began serving as interim director Dec. 1.

She said she is looking forward to hosting LCCTA events such as the World Human Powered Speed Challenge, which draws racers from across the globe, and the annual Chukar Tournament, which showcases Lander County as a hunting destination.

"Although these are well-established events, we are looking to add a few exciting elements to them," Tomera said. "We are also looking for other signature events that we might be able to bring to Lander County."

She added she is looking forward to working with new Battle Mountain Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sady Tingey to promote Battle Mountain and Lander County.

The LCCTA executive director position is full time and consists of managing the Battle Mountain Civic Center and posting items to the marquee, public budget planning and management, grant writing, audit and state reporting, organizing events and running the website at www.battlemountaintourism.com.

Tomera served as the executive director of the Battle Mountain Chamber of Commerce for two years prior to taking her new position. She said the experience she gained in that job will help her run the LCCTA and the civic center.

She feels she made significant contributions to the community during her time with the chamber by hosting wine walks and movies in the park. She said the new holiday cookie walk has unlimited potential.

A 23-year Battle Mountain resident, Tomera, is married to Paul Tomera. The couple's children are Lindsey Masterson of Las Vegas, Nicholas Tomera of Honolulu, and Jayme Tomera of Battle Mountain. The couple also help Paula Tomera's parents raise her nieces, Cheyann, 16, and Madisen Zollinger, 10.

She said she is thankful for all of the help and support of her family with her jobs at the chamber and the LCCTA.

Along with other family members, Paula Tomera and her husband own the Tomera Ranch, which has been in Battle Mountain since 1984.

She serves on the Lander Economic Development Authority and the Marigold Community Investment Committee.
