Court hearing scheduled in I-80 pot bust

WINNEMUCCA - A Grass Valley, Calif., resident arrested last month with more than 20 pounds of marijuana on Interstate 80 near Mote in Humboldt County is scheduled for a preliminary hearing May 18 in Union Township Justice Court.

Timothy Kerr has been charged with transporting a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for sale. He is currently free on $30,000 bond.

Kerr was traveling west on I-80 Feb. 23 in a van pulling a small trailer when an NDI investigator and a Winnemucca police officer in an unmarked car observed him cross the fog line three times in the span of a mile and pulled the vehicle over.

An NHP trooper arrived on the scene with K-9 Gripper and the dog "alerted" on the vehicle for the presence of marijuana, police reports said.

Kerr, who was traveling with his wife and three children, denied having any marijuana in the vehicle but verbally allowed officers to search his vehicle and trailer.

Officers found 24 bags of marijuana in a cooler in the front of the trailer. According to an NHP report, the marijuana weighed 26 pounds.
