Court delays child safety act

The Nevada Department of Public Safety has delayed implementation of Assembly Bill 579 from the 2007 Legislative Session, scheduled for Feb. 1, pending further litigation.

AB579 would bring Nevada into compliance with the federal Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006. The law assigns all convicted sex offenders an increased frequency of in-person reporting to local law enforcement and assigns an increased duration of the requirement to register as a sex offender for some offenders.

Jan. 30, the Nevada Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order against implementation of AB 579. Therefore, the laws in Chapter 179D of the Nevada Revised Statutes that were to be repealed by AB 579 remain in effect until further notice.
