WINNEMUCCA - David Fox Thayer is Humboldt County's first baby of 2014.

Fox was born at 8:04 a.m., on Thursday, Jan. 2, at Humboldt General Hospital. He weighed 8 pounds and was 20 inches long. He was delivered by Dr. Len Perkinson.

Mom Allyson Thayer was due Dec. 27.

"Everybody thought I was going to go early," she said.

In fact, the young mother said she was getting "antsy" since she was already on maternity leave but her son wasn't cooperating.

Finally, Wednesday night, Allyson had just hung up the phone after speaking with her mother when she felt the first pains. That was about 8:30 p.m.; by 10:30 p.m., she was at the hospital where she spent a long night waiting for her son to arrive.

Fox obliged just after 8 a.m., much to the delight of his mother and grandparents. Fox joins his 3-year-old brother, Cole, and 21-month-old sister, Willow.

"It's going to be a little tough having these three so close together," said Allyson. "But it will be good for me."

She said she hopes her children will "grow up close," and that, because of their closeness, they will support each other as they move through life.

"I was a little shocked to know he was the first baby," said Allyson. "I know a lot of other girls that are due at this time and I thought they would go first."

Fox's birth also came with another surprise. He shares a birthday with his great-grandmother, who passed away in 2013.

"So that was pretty special," said Allyson.

Allyson and Fox will receive gifts from area organizations and businesses.

The OB nurses at Humboldt General Hospital, led by Kathryn Esquivel, R.N., gathered the following gifts: Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary - gift certificate; Cattlewomen of Nevada - $25 gift certificate for beef; Kateri Karma - homemade baby soap; CB Brown - two coffee cups, hot pad and dishtowels; Rice Jewelers - pewter baby rattle; Weezies - bamboo cutting board; Second Street Seasonals - lamb bath set; Tips Western - sshlumpie cuddly lamb; Las Margaritas - $30 gift certificate; Creative Photography - free sitting for baby and 8x10 framed photograph; Attitudes/Jacqueline Johnson - hand and foot crème giftpack; Attitudes - shampoo and taming spray; Phillips Furniture - $50 gift certificate; Goodnight Irene - baby pillow and pacifier; Papa Murphy's - two large one-topping pizzas; and, The Martin Hotel - $25 gift certificate.
