Counterfeiter released after preliminary hearing

Alleged counterfeiter Stuart Everett Thurber, 53, waived his right to a preliminary hearing when he appeared in Union Township Justice Court on Thursday, Dec. 4. His case was bound over to district court. Thurber was arrested in November on 55 counts of uttering a forged instrument and for possession of methamphetamine. His bail was set $280,000.

By stipulated agreement, Thurber was released on his own recognizance.

Wesley James Mustain, 53, who was arrested along with Thurber, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Friday, Dec.12. He is represented by Steve Cochran, public defender.

Mustain was arrested on two counts of uttering a forged instrument with bail set at $10,000.

The two men allegedly passed fake bills around town by making small purchases with counterfeit hundred dollar bills and then received change in real money.

Lower denominations of money were allegedly washed and then reprinted as $100 bills. Police said the quality of the counterfeit money was convincing and had passed the usual methods of detecting fake bills.[[In-content Ad]]
